NAPT Special Needs Transportation Endorsements Continue to Grow

The National Association for Pupil Transportation announced that student transporters from Tennessee and Colorado
are the latest to complete required curriculum for the group's Special Needs Training Program.
Gena Murchison, a special education route specialist for the Jackson-Madison County School Systems in
Jackson, Tenn., and Karen Knight, a safety and training manager at Adams 12 Five Star Schools in Thornton, Colo.,
were named the 25th and 26th in the nation, respectively, to obtain the endorsement. An NAPT spokesperson said
Murchison completed her coursework at the recent NAPT Summit and Transporting Students with Disabilities
National Conference, the latter which is now owned and operated by School Transportation News' parent company
STN Media Group. Meanwhile, Knight completed her training at the NAPT Summit and at Colorado State Pupil
Transportation Association events
.

The NAPT Special Needs Transportation Training Program provides numerous means for transportation personnel
serving students with disabilities to access educational opportunities at both local and national conferences and
to gain national recognition for their efforts. Core curriculum consists of six special needs courses in a variety of
different settings, including a school bus roadeo and a trade show of school transportation products and services.
The core curriculum is supplemented by two courses of elective instruction from the NAPT Professional Development
Series (PDS) Program. The syllabus for the core curriculum was specifically designed to increase an individual's
specific knowledge about transporting students with disabilities.

Colorado State Poster Contest

The NAPT National School Bus Safety Week

(NSBSW) Committee is pleased to send you the attached NSBSW Poster Rules for 2012.  The poster theme that students
should draw before September 2012  is "Stand Back from the Yellow and Black."  [The Poster theme and the Safety Week
theme are different in any one school year.  This year's Poster theme (2012) will become the Safety Week theme next year:
2013.]   Please contact me for further clarification, if needed (some days I'm still confused by it!).

CHANGE OF PRIZE

Per the Unites States government, U.S. Savings Bonds are now paperless:

Paper Savings Bonds Go Extinct

As of Jan 1, the Treasury Department is no longer issuing paper savings bonds, such as the Series EE, at banks.
Rather, the patriotic gift of choice is now available online exclusively. The reason for the switch: cost. "It's been
coming for a long time," says Mckayla Braden, spokeswoman for the Bureau of the Public Debt at the Treasury
Department. "Savings bonds are, in their paper form, an expensive program."

By eliminating paper, the federal government expects to save $70 million in the first five years.
For consumers, going digital will have at least one benefit - no more worries about misplacing the certificates.
To purchase electronic savings bonds, individuals must create an account at www.TreasuryDirect.gov.

-Michelle Diament

Given the change from paper to paperless,  our committee has decided (for this year)
to award the cash equivalent of the previous Saving Bond prizes.  This means, for example, the overall winner,
whose bond prize would have been $1,000, will now be given a check for $500.

This is good news as it should streamline our process, given that student social security numbers will no longer be needed.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you for promoting school bus safety.

Our 2012 "Children's Choice Driver of the Year Essay Contest" is now open for entry submissions.  Information is posted
on our website, and below you will find the Flyer and Permission slip that you can e-mail, hand-out and post on your website
Be creative where you hand out these flyers - Transportation directors are not the only individuals that might spread the
word.  This can be a great class-writing project for teachers.  There tends to be great local press and relationship building

if the winner or runner-up come from your AOR, so spread the word!

For anyone involved in a Love The Bus Event, that is another opportunity to share the news of our contest!

The first document contains both the flyer and the permission slip.  The second flyer contains just the flyer.
