CLASSIFIED VACANCY
This position is for the 2021-2022 School Year

Job Title:  Mechanic (Diesel Fleet Mechanic)                                 

Location:  Transportation

Pay Range:  $23.14 - $33.37

Work Year:  260 days per year (year-round employee)

Reports To:  Fleet Manager
 
SUMMARY: 
Maintain the District's school bus fleet and support vehicles, snow blowers, lawn mowers, etc.  Train Bus Drivers and other personnel on proper use and care of equipment.
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The frequency and percentage of time of duties may vary based on building assignment or department.

1. Diagnose and repair fleet of District vehicles, including school buses, cars, vans, maintenance trucks, tractors, lawn equipment, and snow removal equipment.
2. Train Bus Drivers and maintenance personnel on the proper care and operation of their assigned vehicles and equipment.
3. Provide emergency road service to bus fleet and maintenance fleet in the event of breakdowns, delays, and/or accidents.
4. Maintain vehicle service and repair records for all District vehicles.
5. Plow snow for the Administration and Transportation parking lots.
6. Perform preventive maintenance schedule on all District vehicles to ensure safety of students and personnel and longevity of equipment.
7. Perform a thorough inspection of all District vehicles used to transport children to ensure all safety equipment and vehicle systems are operating properly as required by the CDE.
8. Maintain annual inspection forms for school buses and other vehicles used to transport children as required by the Colorado Department of Education.
9. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

• High school diploma or equivalent.

 
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: 
Knowledge of medium duty truck mechanics and buses.  Operating knowledge of and experience with computer diagnostic equipment, volt and ohm meters, mig and arc welders, and cutting torch. 
 
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

• CDL license, CDE Inspector Qualification Certificate, and Department of Transportation physical exam preferred at hire; required within 30 days after hire.
• First Aid certification and CPR certification required within 3 months after hire. 
• P2 and S Endorsement required within 30 days after hire. 
• Criminal background check required for hire.
• Vaccinations may be required.

 
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.  Acts as a technical resource for Bus Drivers by training them on proper mirror maintenance, operation of buses, and equipment care, and for building maintenance personnel by instructing them on the proper inspection and operation of support vehicles.  Technical resource responsibilities extend within the department.
 
DIVERSITY OF DUTIES:
Duties require cross training in instruction, parts, and fuel inventories, driving a school bus and operation of all types of District vehicles.  Duties extend within immediate department on a daily basis.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
 
MENTAL FUNCTIONS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to analyze.  Frequently required to compare, communicate, coordinate, instruct, evaluate, and use interpersonal skills.  Occasionally required to copy, compute, synthesize, compile, and negotiate.
 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

1. Twelve (12) month position (260 days).
2. Eight (8) hours per day.
