Position: Lead Vehicle Mechanic
(8 hours per day, 260 days per year, Location: Transportation)
Classification: Middle Manager –Professional Technical (Minimum $46,000 per year)
SUMMARY: Assist the Transportation Manager in the planning, prioritizing, organization, and evaluations for the Transportation Fleet and Maintenance Dept, which provides maintenance, repairs, and inspections of the district fleet. Ensure compliance with the State and Federal laws and the district policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
*Copy of current Motor Vehicle Record is required.
*High school diploma or equivalent plus specialized technical courses in business, vocational school, or community college related to a trade or skill. Specify courses/area of study required: Medium/Heavy duty diesel engines.
*3 + years experience in bus maintenance including medium/heavy duty diesel engines.
*Advanced mechanical repair skills, knowledge of repairing heavy duty gasoline and diesel vehicles.
*Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to appropriate administrator.
*Basic math and computer skills, written communication skills, supervisory skills, critical thinking and problem solving.
*Ability to promote and follow Superintendent policies and building procedures, ability to communicate, interact and work effectively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
*Must provide basic tools and tool box.
*Possess Current CDL with AP2S endorsement, Current CDE Inspector Qualification Certificate, including CDE Brake Inspector Certificate, Current CDE Third Party Tester Qualification Certificate required. Current Colorado Diesel Opacity License desired.
*Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
*Experience working with diverse cultures and backgrounds desirable.
Job Responsibilities:
*Prioritize, schedule and assign repairs for district fleet. Schedule state and federal inspections. Oversee and assist with
repairs.
*Diagnose and repair all vehicles and equipment to include but not limited to diesel engines, drive-train systems,
suspension and steering, heating/cooling, airbrakes, wheelchair lifts, etc.
*Oversee and assist in daily repairs of the fleet and help supervise in emergency situations regarding the fleet and the
transportation building.
*Respond or monitor after hours emergency repairs. Respond to driver concerns.
*Monitor and maintain all records, certificates, licenses, forms, registrations and emissions requirements as required by
the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and United Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
*Organize and maintain parts department. Order parts, check repair orders, and maintain vehicle fluids. Help to maintain shop
equipment and make sure shop area is safe. Interact with various vendors who serve the transportation department.
*Perform data entry of work orders and record parts usage. Arrange appointments and track all vehicles sent in for
maintenance or repairs. Monitor warranties on vehicles.
*Monitor and update all mechanic licenses, certifications and registrations. Assist mechanics including ongoing training for
trouble shooting, repairing vehicles and overseeing safety. Research and write vehicle and equipment specifications for
transportation and maintenance department. Attend staff meetings and training classes as needed.
*Assist in recruiting, screening and making recommendations for hire.
*Repairs and maintains district vehicles.
*Spends up to 50% of time performing supervisory responsibilities. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
*Responsibilities include providing input into the hiring of employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; providing input into employee appraisal; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
*Able to train in diagnostic operations of engines.
*Able to train on computer regarding Fleet Programs, know CDE specifications for Special Ed and for regular education.
*Able to assist drivers in the correct use of bus operations and safety issues regarding safe bus and driving skills.
*Act as a resource to employees throughout the district by providing technical assistance for the operation of all district vehicles.
*Perform other duties as assigned.
